Is Gel Polish Bad for Your Nails?
Let’s clear this up.
If you’ve ever removed your gel and thought, “My nails feel wrecked,” you’re not alone.
We hear this all the time. But here’s the honest truth: it’s not the gel polish that’s damaging your nails. It’s the way it’s being used.
Whether you're doing your nails at home or in a salon, the outcome always comes down to two things:
Technique and product quality.
What actually causes damage?
There are two main reasons your nails might feel thin, flaky or sensitive after wearing gel:
-
Improper prep or removal
-
Poor-quality, chemical-heavy products
Let’s talk about both.
Prep and removal matter more than you think
Gel polish isn’t harmful on its own. It’s designed to be protective. But when it’s applied or removed the wrong way, that’s when damage happens.
Over-buffing your natural nail before application can weaken your nail plate. Ripping, scraping or forcefully peeling off gel instead of soaking or gently filing? That’s when you’re literally pulling layers off your own nail.
The result? Nails that are soft, sore, bendy or break easily. And it’s frustrating, because it makes you feel like you’ve done something wrong. But the truth is, most people have never been taught how to apply and remove gel properly at home. That’s where we come in.
Let’s talk ingredients
Not all gel polishes are made equal.
Many mainstream brands still use harsh ingredients like formaldehyde, toluene or cheap plasticisers that can dry out your nails and irritate your skin. These formulas may be cheap, but they crack easily, don't cure well, and are harder to remove.
Mitty gel polishes are different.
Our formulas are:
-
Non-toxic
-
Cruelty-free and vegan
-
FDA-compliant
We’ve taken out all the nasties and focused on performance and safety. You still get salon-level results, but without putting your nail health at risk.
When you're putting something on your body regularly, it should be safe. That’s why so many of our customers have made the switch to Mitty after reacting to other brands.
Done right, gel can actually help your nails
Here’s the good news. When applied and removed correctly, gel polish can protect your natural nails. It acts like a shield, preventing chips, breaks and peeling as your nails grow underneath.
A lot of our long-time customers have stronger, longer nails now than when they started, because they’ve learned to treat their nails with care. This is why we have a removal kit to help you with safe removal of your gel.
Our top tips for healthy gel polish use at home
1. Don’t over-buff your natural nails
Just a light buff to remove shine is enough. You don’t need to file them thin. If you find doing this hard, we have the solution for you. Mitty Mani/Pedi pret kit is your friend for safe and effective removal. It is specially design to help you prepare your nails and get to those hard corners without damaging your nails!
2. Always use a base coat
This helps the gel adhere properly and adds a layer of protection between your nail and the pigment.
3. Cure fully under a quality lamp
Inadequate curing leads to under-cured polish, which can cause lifting and sensitivity. We recommend our Mitty pro LED lamp for an even cure.
4. Never peel off your gel
Seriously. Don’t do it. Soak it off properly using our gel remover wraps or use a fine e-file bit if you’ve been trained.
5. Finish with cuticle oil
Every time. Hydrated nails are healthy nails. Use a high-quality, nourishing cuticle oil daily, even when your nails are done.
So, is gel polish bad for your nails?
Not when you use quality products and take the time to apply and remove them properly.
That’s exactly why we created Mitty gel polish in the first place to give DIY users salon-level results without the harsh ingredients or aggressive techniques that damage nails over time.
You deserve nails that look good and feel healthy.
